Unlike Windows Server 2008, Disk Management doesn’t have the function of extending disk partition on Windows Server 2003 R2. If you don’t want to rely on third-party partition software for C drive resizing on Windows Server 2003 R2, you may rely on Diskpart command. Diskpart command is a Windows built-in tool which is able to extend disk partition without any other partition software. However, Diskpart command is not always available because it has some limitations.

1. Diskpart command cannot shrink a partition, so you must ensure that there is unallocated space on your Windows Server 2003 R2 if you want to extend disk partition.
2. Diskpart command can only extend NTFS data partition. In another word, you cannot extend a data partition that has FAT file system, and you cannot extend a system partition no matter it is NTFS or FAT file system.
3. Diskpart command cannot move partition. If the unallocated space is not adjacent to the partition you want to extend, you cannot extend the partition, either.
